This oughta hold the little bastards

Stuff I saw; things I read…

Why I heart driftglass, reason # 3,997: He can smack down Bobo like nobody else. Just read and enjoy:

“Then, because whatever the truth is Bobo is damned well going to grind and blast and sledgehammer this story until the narrative fits into his Procrustean Bed of the Happy Town of Centerville, we are presented with the Liberal Student who will “switch to the Republicans in a heartbeat if I believe my ideas are better received in the G.O.P.”

Hell, I’d switch from off-brand mayo to owl poop if owls pooped apple butter.

And I’d certainly switch from Bud to squirrel urine if it turned out squirrels peed 20-year-old Oban.

But they don’t.

And as a disingenuous little weasel like Bobo knows full well, that is the very fucking point. Lots of people might switch to the GOP if they weren’t evil, planet-raping Christopaths.

But they are.

They’re proud of it.

It’s right on the letterhead.”

Oooooh. Be still, my commie-lovin’ fellow traveler heart. Soviet anti-capitalist propaganda! On DVD!

Oh crap, I missed it. January 31st was National Gorilla Suit Day.
Especially during the past 3 or 4 days, traipsing around the Twin Cities in a gorilla suit would’ve been pretty nice and toasty. Damn. Oh well. Wait’ll next year!

Speaking of smackdowns, Mary Cheney finally gets the one she deserves, courtesy of Dan Savage:

“You kept your mouth clamped shut when your father needed the political support of assholes like Dobson. And now that your dad is a despised lame-duck VP, dad’s gay-bashing political allies feel free to treat you with the same contempt with which they have long treated other gay and lesbians. And now you cry foul?

Sorry, Mary, and fuck you. You and your whole fucked-up family crawled into bed with bigots like Dobson when it suited you. And now you and your whole fucked-up family have some explaining to do. So welcome to the political debate, Mary, and remember…

Your side started it. It only serves you right that you’re going to have to finish it.”

Hmm. National Gorilla Suit Day… “Bobo”… Who or what does that remind me of?

Why, Kevin Murphy of course. That would be the Kevin Murphy who played adorable portly red robot Tom Servo as well as distinguished silverback gorilla scientist Professor Bobo on MST3K.

Kevin’s working on a new project with a couple other Best Brains alumni, and as luck would have it, they need our help. Here’s Kevin with a shout-out to all MSTies :

re: Mary Cheney – It just occurred to me – this is really no different than the rich thinking that they are absolved from any moral issue based upon their obvious superiority, They can get abortions, although the masses should not; they can be gay or lesbians , but the masses cannot; they can rape and get away with it; they can steal. The list goes on and on. So yes – Mary Cheney thinks that she and her partner are different from other lesbians – look at the money and power her family has! It only proves her superiority and that she should not be held to the standards that the lower classes are. And really – who the hell are all of you to question it?

  • Spot on analysis, Kari. All too often the rich/powerful/controlling class really *do* think that they’re above the law.

I’ve got like 20 MST3Ks on cassette, but it annoys my wife when I make commenst during movies.

Amanda per your comment: I used to love Pandagon. It was one of the first blogs I ever read. When Amanda took over I took offense with some of teh things she wrote about men in general, and had some rather heated arguments with her in the comments section. I’m very much in favor of women’s rights, but I don’t think men should have to sacrfrice some of theirs just to know how women have been treated in the past. I don’t really so much as see her as anti-catholic as really anti-Patriarcy or anything that sorta resembles it. One of her posts way back wondering if married women could ever really honestly consent to their husbands(Who they are economically tied to), made me pretty mad.

As a neutral, or casual reader of blogs, a potential voter may come across some of these posts(More likely have their nose rubbed in it by teh right wing) and dervive a negative feeling towards Amanda, and thusly John Edwards. Right wing will not go Edwards, and the oens in his camp already have their minds made up. It is the majority who are undecided who are placed at risk with Amanda on board.

  • I have a feeling that searching Pandagon for anything related to gender issues would yield nearly the entire site back in your search results. That’s really not being specific enough. Do you honestly think that “anything related to gender issues” that Amanda has written at Pandagon reveals her to be “offensive” and “sexist”, with “male-hating issues”?

I’m also discouraged to see you buy into the right’s blatantly false accusation that Amanda has “scrubbed” the Pandagon archives, either now or previously.

When you make statements like “..If she hasn’t cleaned the archives of late” you reveal that you’re allowing yourself to be played.
I think that you’re too smart for that.

Another discouraging statement is “I don’t believe that in order to be in favor of women’s rights you should oppose men’s.” Similarly stated in your other comment: “I’m very much in favor of women’s rights, but I don’t think men should have to sacrfrice some of theirs just to know how women have been treated in the past.”

I would suggest that gender equality is not an either/or, all or nothing equation. What rights are men “sacrificing” when women have the exact same rights? How does supporting equal rights for women “oppose” men’s rights? Answer me those two questions, and then we might move on to examining the concepts of male privilege and male entitlement. Or are those attitudes that you don’t believe exist? Or if they do exist, are those attitudes you feel comfortable with? and do you consider those attitudes the way things should be in relations between the sexes?
Your statement “One of her posts way back wondering if married women could ever really honestly consent to their husbands(Who they are economically tied to), made me pretty mad” reveals a lot about you, DAV.

Another question: how does men “sacrific[ing] some of their rights” enable men to “know how women have been treated in the past”? And still more questions: Do you think women were treated unfairly only in the past? What about the present? Have we now obliterated gender discrimination and mysogyny from the world?

But perhaps the most basic question I would like to see you answer is this one:

Do you think that it is possible for a woman to express anger at the specific actions of specific men, and to denounce those actions, and yet at the same time not hate men?

Your answer will say a lot more about you than it will about anything else.

Tild I think this is getting blown way out of control here, and this is the last thing I want right now. I think we need to talk. You are making blanket assumptions on me, just because I don’t see things exactly as you do. I like you a whole lot, and don’t wish to antagononize you. However I fully reserve the right to disagree with you(In a polite manner of course)

Do you really think I’m a bad person because I find what Amanda Marcotte writes to go way over the line of between anti-patriarcy and ant-male? Surely this is not the case.

Send me your phone number so we can talk this out. I’ll brew some tea.

  • Whoa! Easy there, buckaroo. I’ve been out of the house most of today, and I just now got around to posting a comment over at your place.

I never said I think you’re a bad person, nor have I been making blanket assumptions — at least, no more than you have.

Of course we agree to disagree. Nobody’s attacking you, DAV!

We’re just talking about stuff that needs to be talked about. Peace!

  • MNObserver

    What’s wrong with being anti-patriarchy?

  • Well, exactly. While reading these comments earlier, I kept muttering to myself “So, explain to me again how being anti-patriarchy is a BAD thing?”

Makes me wonder if DAV is familiar with Twisty at I Blame the Patriarchy?

Those would be some interesting conversations…
